Global Spotlight! ITMCTR Included in WHO’s Global Traditional Medicine Strategy
Recently, the 78th World Health Assembly reviewed and adopted the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034. As a guiding document for the development of traditional medicine worldwide over the next decade, the strategy provides systematic guidance to promote the integration of traditional medicine with modern health systems. Of particular note is the strategic objective to “strengthen the evidence base for traditional, complementary and integrative medicine (TCIM),” which explicitly states: “Encourage Member States to register TCIM clinical trials in WHO’s International Traditional Medicine Clinical Trial Registry and other WHO-recognized clinical trial Registries”.

This milestone marks the formal inclusion of ITMCTR into the WHO’s strategic framework, signaling the international community’s heightened recognition of scientific research, evidence generation, and regulatory compliance in the field of traditional medicine. At the same time, this development underscores the strategic importance and leadership role of the ITMCTR in enhancing global transparency in traditional medicine research, promoting international scientific collaboration, and strengthening regulatory review of clinical projects.

As the world’s specialized and unique cross-regional registry focused on traditional medicine, ITMCTR was officially recognized in February 2023 as a Primary Registry of the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), and is operated by the China Center for Evidence Based Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its establishment represents a significant step forward in improving the transparency and standardization of traditional medicine clinical research, providing a more reliable platform for global research, and facilitating the high-quality development of traditional medicine evidence. Looking ahead, ITMCTR will continue to respond to the calls of the global strategy, striving to build an open, collaborative, and innovation-driven global research community in traditional medicine, and laying a solid foundation for its modernization and development.
